Spread the love

What Christmas of birthday gift do you get for a child who already seems to have every toy? Or who always has too much energy and wants something more exciting to do? But of course: a hoverboard!

These high-tech personal transportation devices can provide hours of entertainment for your little ones. The best hoverboards for kids today are not only safer than they used to be but they also come with all kinds of features your kids will love, such as flashing LED lights to illuminate their path, bluetooth speakers to play their favorite tunes, and all kinds of fun colors to choose from.

One thing you need to know first is that your kid needs to be at least 44 pounds (20 kg) to ride a hoverboard. Usually a six-year-old is around that weight. Also, accidents do happen, so make sure you get some protective gear as well, such as a children's helmet and knee & elbow pads like these.

After lots of research, I have carefully chosen the below five children's hoverboards that are the best on the market right now. These are the safest hoverboards for kids, as they are carefully designed for their needs, and all are UL2272 certified, which means they meeting industry safety standards and have been subjected to the most rigorous testing. Besides looking at safety, here are more tips for buying a new hoverboard.

A few of the five children's hoverboards I'll introduce below also make my list of the overall best hoverboards in 2020, which you should check out if you're looking for a hoverboard for adults.

So without further ado, here are the top 5 hoverboards for kids in 2020!

TOMOLOO 6.5 inch Hoverboard

SISIGAD 6.5″ Hoverboard

XPRIT Hoverboard

LIEAGLE Hoverboard

Gyroor Warrior Hoverboard

Best Hoverboards for Kids

1. TOMOLOO Music Rhythmed Hoverboard

The TOMOLOO Music Rhythymed Hoverboard is my #1 recommended bluetooth  hoverboard for kids of all ages (so long as they meet the minimum weight requirement of 44 pounds). I've even got a dedicated TOMOLOO hoverboard review!

This board also had a higher customer rating on Amazon than any of the others at the time I wrote this. Read on to find out what is so special about the TOMOLOO!

Product Highlights

  • Product weight: 17.6 lbs (8 kg)
  • Can carry 44-220 pounds (20-100 kg)
  • Bluetooth speaker
  • LED lights that synchonize to the music being played
  • Max speed 7.5 MPH (12 km/hr)
  • Top rated on Amazon
  • 6.5-inch wheels
  • 2-3 hours charging time
  • Can travel 2-3 hours on one charge

The Good

The TOMOLOO Music Rhythmed Hoverboard is a super-fun hoverboard, and that's my it tops my list. It's got colorful forward-pointing LED lights, spinning lights on the wheels, and the most unique feature of all: the lights will sync up with the music your child plays through its bluetooth speakers.

The TOMOLOO is the second lighted hoverboard on my list (#4 below is just barely lighter). It is 17.6 pounds, or 8 kilograms, which is one of the lightest hoverbaords on the market. This means it will be eaiser for your kid to carry it if necessary.

It can reach 7.5 MPH, which is a little faster than some of the others below, but still not too fast like some adult boards. Moreover, the top speed can be controlled with three different speed settings, so you can decide how fast your kid will be able to travel on this board. Last but not least, it charges faster than some other boards.

The Bad

Even though it says it can hold up to 220 pounds, this board is definitely not designed for adults (try #5 for one the whole family can use). Also, as a children's hoverboard, don't expect this one to be super powerful or to be able to go offroading on it.

Who Is This Hoverboard Good For?

The TOMOLOO Music Rhythmed Hoverboard is awesome for any kids, so long as they are above 44 pounds (usually around age 6). Kids who are into music and like flashy lights will especially love it. It's faster than the next two boards I'll introduce, but not crazy fast like #5. A perfect happy medium!

Check out this boy explaining how to use a TOMOLOO Music Ryhtmed Hoverboard:

PROS

  • Fun spinning lights
  • Lights sync with music on bluetooth speakers
  • Can reach a decent speed for a kids' board
  • Three speed modes to choose from
  • Highly rated by users
  • Short charging time
  • Super light for easier carrying

CONS

  • Doesn't come in many different color choices
  • Not the best for off-roading (same can be said for the next 3 choices though)

2. SISIGAD 6.5" Hoverboard

Next up is one of the top-selling hoverboards on Amazon at the moment. The SISIGAD Hoverboard has got many (but not all!) of the same features as the TOMOLOO, but with a lower price tag (at the time of writing). Let's take a closer look!

Product Highlights

  • 15+ colors to choose from
  • Product weight: 20 lbs (9 kg)
  • Can carry 44-200 pounds (20-91 kg)
  • Bluetooth speaker & spinning lights
  • Max speed 6 MPH (10 km/hr)
  • Top seller
  • 3-5 hours charging time
  • Last 30 min to 1 hour per charge

The Good

The SISIGAD 6.5" (the number refers to the diameter of the wheels, which are the smallest size for hoverboards) comes with fun features your kids will love, such as spinning LED lights, a bluetooth speaker, and around different colors to choose from. All this comes at a very affordable price.

This board is at the lowest end of the spectrum when it comes to speed, maxing out at 6 MPH (10 km/hr). For very young kids, though, this might be something you as a parent would prefer. This is one of the top selling hoverboards on Amazon, thanks to its balance of great features and reasonable price.

The Bad

With the SISIGAD's lower price comes a few imperfections. The board has a short battery life, and that's after a pretty long charging time of 3-5 hours. What's more, if you have an order kid who loves pushing it to the limit, this board has pretty much the lowest maximum speed of any hoverboard these days, 6 MPH.

Who Is This Hoverboard Good For?

Which is lower maximum speed and large range of cool colors to choose from, the SISIGAD Hoverboard will probably appeal most to younger kids, especially one whose parents are looking for a good deal.

In the video below, watch these kids explain how to ride their new SISIGAD:

PROS

  • Tons of colors to choose from
  • Lots of LED lights & Bluetooth speaker
  • Reasonable price
  • Suitable for very young kids

CONS

  • Long charging time
  • Short battery life
  • Slow max speed

3. XPRIT SBW-666 Hoverboard

If the SISIGAD stood out to you so far, then you'll also want to consider the XPRIT Hoverboard, which is comparable to it in many ways, with an identical price tag at the time of writing.

Product Highlights

  • 10+ colors to choose from
  • Product weight: 19 lbs (8.6 kg)
  • Can carry 44-165 pounds (20-75 kg)
  • Bluetooth speaker & spinning lights
  • Max speed 6.2 MPH (10 km/hr)
  • 2-3 hours charging time
  • Last 45 min to 75 min per charge

The Good

The XPRIT is yet another hoverboard for kids that is worth considering. It's got fun colors to choose from, spinning lights, a bluetooth speaker; pretty much everything you would hope for in a hoverboard.

Compared to the SISIGAD, though, it's has a shorter charging time, and the battery seems to last slightly longer once charged. It's also got a slow maximum speed, best for the youngest of riders, and a very reasonable price tag.

The Bad

The XPRIT has a lower upper weight limit than any other board on this list. So while none of these boards (except for #5) are really meant for adults, this one especially isn't. Even some bigger teens may exceed the maximum weight limit, and you don't really even want to be getting close to the upper limit.

Also, like the last entry, this board is one of the slowest, so don't expect crazy power from it. Even though the battery life is better is slightly better than the SISIGAD, it's still not good.

Who Is This Hoverboard Good For?

Like the SISIGAD, the XPRIT Hoverboard is also ideal for very young riders, and parents who want a good deal will be happy with its low price.

Here's a review video of the XPRIT. Sorry, I couldn't find a child doing a review for this one!

PROS

  • Short charging time
  • Good for very young kids
  • Cool colors to choose from
  • Anti-slip foot pads and non-slip tires
  • Spinning lights and bluetooth speaker

CONS

  • Short battery life
  • Low maximum weight limit, so especially not suitable for older/larger riders
  • Slow max speed

4. LIEAGLE Hoverboard

The LIEAGLE Hoverboard is the lowest-priced hoverboard on this list (at the time of writing), yet it comes with surprisingly impressive capabilities. Read on to find out what they are!

Product Highlights

  • 10+ colors to choose from
  • Product weight: 17 lbs (7.7 kg)
  • Can carry 44-264 pounds (20-120 kg)
  • Bluetooth speaker & spinning lights
  • Max speed 7.5 MPH (12 km/hr)
  • 2-3 hours charging time
  • Last 1-2 hours per charge

The Good

Want a good hoverboard for kids with a great price? Here it is! The LIEAGLE is the cheapest hoverboard on this list at the time of writing. Yet, it's got all the same features you'd hope for, a fast charging time, and longer battery life than the other budget choices we looked at.

One more plus: this is the lightest hoverboard on this list, at only 17 pounds (7.7 kilograms), which will make it easier for your child to carry if necessary. This board can get up to 7.5 MPH, the same speed as the TOMOLOO (#1), but for nearly half the price. (Note: there's an even cheaper hoverboard for kids out there, but it didn't quite make my list!)

The Bad

With such a low price, you can't expect everything from this board. Even though it has a higher maximum weight limit, it still doesn't really have the power than an adult would want with a hoverboard. The battery life is OK but not amazing, and some people complain in reviews that they have trouble connecting the Bluetooth.

Who Is This Hoverboard Good For?

The LIEAGLE Hoverboard is a decent choice for parents that want to buy one of the cheapest hoverboards for kids, but one that still holds up and has everything a kid would want.

Here's a boy reviewing his LIEAGLE Hoverboard:

PROS

  • Low price
  • Decent speed (for a children's board)
  • Higher maximum weight limit
  • Fast charging time
  • Bluetooth speaker & spinning lights
  • 10+ colors to choose from

CONS

  • OK but not great battery life
  • Some complaints about connectivity issues for Bluetooth

5. Gyroor Warrior 8.5"

OK, so I didn't want every single children's hoverboard I recommend to be for super young kids & absolute beginners. That's where the Gyroor Warrior comes in. This more powerful board will please older kids' need for speed & power, and mom & dad will get a kick out of it, too.

Product Highlights

  • Black or blue color options
  • Powerful dual 350W motor (700W combined)
  • Product weight: 33 lbs (15 kg)
  • Can carry 44-265 pounds (20-120 kg)
  • Bluetooth speaker
  • App with loads of features
  • Child & adult modes
  • Max speed 9.5 MPH (15 km/hr)
  • 1.5 to 2 hours charging time
  • Last 2-3 hours per charge

The Good

The Gyroor Warrior is exactly what it says it is: a warrior. Compared to the other four hoverboards for kids I recommend above, it has larger wheels (8.5 inch), a stronger motor (350W X2), and can travel faster (9.5 MPH).

With those more powerful specs, the warrior can do more than the other children's hoverboards, including offroading. This also means that it is more suitable for adults to ride, so it is the kind of hoverboard the whole family can enjoy. It was intentionally designed to be suitable for all ages of riders, so long as they meet the minimum weight requirement.

The Bad

At the 33 lbs, this is by far the heaviest board on my list, at nearly double the weight of some of the other hoverboards. This means it might be very difficult or even impossible for your child to carry it if he or she needs to. What's more, some people complain that this hoverboard makes a lot of annoying beeps.

Who Is This Hoverboard Good For?

The Gyroor Warrior is the best hoverboard for teenagers and any older kids that want a little more power and speed than the usual boards designed specifically for kids. It is also a good choice for families who want to share a single board.

Watch this young man give an in dept review of the Gyroor Warrior:

PROS

  • Powerful & fast
  • Child & adult settings
  • Added self-balancing technology
  • Bluetooth speaker
  • Off-roading capability

CONS

  • Only 2 colors to choose from
  • Very heavy
  • More expensive
  • Could be too powerful for very young kids

Factors to Consider When Choosing

When looked at the above best hoverboards for children, the numerous specs and features can be a little intimidating. Below I'll break down the most important things to pay attention to when shopping for a children's hoverboard.

Wheel Size

Hoverboards generally come with three different wheel diameter sizes: 6.5", 8" (or sometimes 8.5"), and 10".  Smaller wheels are better for smaller riders. This is why #1 to #4 in the above list of top hoverboards for kids are all 6.5". Only the Gyroor Warrior has 8.5" wheels.

Maximum Speed

For young kids, you don't want a hoverboard that goes too fast. That's why our recommended children's hoverboards mostly go 6-7.5 MPH. That is definitely enough for kids, and even adults on faster boards seldom actually reach the maximum speed.

Only the Gyroor Warrior on this goes up to 9.5 MPH, but you can control the maximum speed by choosing child mode. Learn more about how fast hoverboards can go here.

Safety

All the hoverboards we recommend for kids above are UL2272 certified, which is a safety standard required for sales in the United States. This means they meet safety standards and have been thoroughly tested. Read more about hoverboard safety here. And don't worry too much; hoverboard tricks aren't nearly as wild as those typically done on a skateboard.

Fun Features for Kids

All the hoverboards I introduced above come with bluetooth speakers. They also all have front facing LED lights and spinning lights on the wheels, except the Gyroor Warrior doesn't have the latter.

Some of the hoverboards I introduced come with more color options than the others, but you can always different colored hoverboard skins. The TOMOLOO stands out with its lights that synchronize to the music.

Ideal Hoverboards for Kids of Different Ages

The hoverboard you end up choosing for your kid may be affected by exactly how old (and how big) your kid is. Here are my general recommendations, but they aren't set in stone.

Best Hoverboard for 5 Year Old

Hold on a second. Your five year old is likely too light to ride a hoverboard. The average weight of a five-year-old is 40 pounds (18 kilograms). That's not heavy enough to ride a hoverboard. The problem is that 44 pounds (20 kg) is the minimum weight need to trigger the foot pads on most hoverboards.

Best Hoverboard for 6 Year Old

Just because your kid is six, and most hoverboards say they are good for six and up, you still need to double check whether your kid weighs at least 44 pounds (20 kg). If so, the best hoverboard for young kids is the SISIGAD 6.5" or the XPRIT Hoverboard thanks due to their lower maximum speed.

Best Hoverboard for 7 Year Old

Since your child most likely meets the minimum weight limit of 44 pounds at the age of 7, the SISIGAD 6.5" or the XPRIT Hoverboard are both great recommendations.

Best Hoverboard for 8 Year Old

While the slowest boards like the SISIGAD 6.5" or the XPRIT Hoverboard remain good recommendations for an eight-year-old, kids of this age may start want a little more speed, such as that offered by the LIEAGEL or the TOMOLOO. The TOMOLOO is especially cool because it syncs its lights to the music, and kids may start having musical preferences around the age of 8.

Best Hoverboard for 9 Year Old

Any of the first four hoverboards I recommend in this article would be great for a nine-yer-old. The parent's budget may dictate whether you go for a cheaper board like the LIEAGLE, or splash out on the fun features of the TOMOLOO. Music-loving kids will definitely get a kick out of the latter.

Best Hoverboard for 10 Year Old

Ten years may be the age when you can start considering getting a more robust and powerful hoverboard for your kid, such as the Gyroor Warrior. Kids with hoverboard experience or who love pushing things to the limit will appreciate its added power. But for beginners or less adventurous kids, any of the other four boards I recommend on this list will likely suffice.

Best Hoverboard for 11 Year Old

Like ten-year-olds, eleven-year-olds are in a gray area where they might still be satisfied with a TOMOLOO, especially with its music & lights features, but they may want or need a little more power, such as what can be provided by the Gyroor or other hoverboards designed for larger riders.

Best Hoverboard for 12 Year Old

What I said above also holds true for 12-year-olds. If you nearly-teen has some hoverboarding/skateboarding experience or is the thrill-seeking type, definitely consider the faster and more powerful Gyroor Warrior, which will continue to keep your kids excited as he or she enters the teenage years. The slower boards I introduce, like the SISIGAD and XPRIT, might just not do it for him or her.

Best Hoverboard for 13 Year Old

Which hoverboard is best for a teenager? That's the question parents of a thirteen-year-old will start to ask. And my advice is to go for a board that offers a little more power and speed than the usual kids hoverboards. Go for the Gyroor Warrior, of find a few other good options in my guide to the best hoverboards for adults

Best Hoverboard for 14 Year Old

At the age of fourteen, you may want to stop thinking about getting a hoverboard for your kid, and start thinking about getting one for your teenager/almost young adult. Only the Gyroor Warrior on this page will have enough power to really excite him or her, but for more ideas, you can head over to my list of best hoverboards for adults.

Final Thoughts on Children's Hoverboards

I hope you've found all the information you needed in here for buying a hoverboard for your precious little one. If the thought of putting your kid on a hoverboard scares you, just remember to get some safety gear, and you may be amazed at how fast he or she gets used to it and is hovering around non-stop!
