Hoverboards, or motorized self-balancing scooters are an awesome innovation. The joy of riding on a hoverboard is something cannot be expressed in words. No wonder the popularity of these devices has grown immensely in recent years! Hoverboards are not only fun to ride but also they are are just a really unique and high-tech way to get around.
If you are planning to buy a hoverboard in 2020, it is important that you do some serious homework first. At best, getting the wrong hoverboard can make it harder for you to control. At the worst, it could be impossible for you to ride or, with really low quality ones, it could even catch fire!
Hoverboard technology and safety has improved a lot in recent years. The growing hoverboard market also means that there are more and more good ones to choose from. After doing lots of market research, I have carefully chosen the five best hoverboards in 2020. Below, I'll explain the pros and cons of each one, why I chose them, and what kind of rider each one is best for!
If you're looking specifically for a hoverboard for a younger rider, then there a few on this list that will work, but for more ideas, head over to my similar articles focused on the best hoverboards for beginners, kids, and teens.
The 5 Hoverboards We'll Be Looking At
Who Should Buy Each of These?
Best Hoverboards: Detailed Reviews
For the complete lowdown on why I've chosen each of these five hoverboards, read one! Below, you'll find pictures, product highlights, and the pros and cons of each one of them!
1. TOMOLOO 6.5": Best for Kids
To begin this list of the top hovrboards, I've chosen a hoverboard that is perfect for children. The features and design of this hoverboard from TOMOLOO are specifically crafted for them. Therefore, the TOMOLOO is not ideal for adults to use, but it does have a girl's version, if you're looking for one of the best hoverboards for girls. You can read my even more detailed TOMOLOO hoverboard review here.
- UL2272, MSDS/UN38.3, and UL2271 certified
- Crafted with high-temperature resistance and fire retardant
- Built-in Bluetooth 4.0 speakers
- RGB LED lighting that synchronizes with music
- Max speed – 7.5 MPH
- Weight capacity – 44-165 lbs.
- Weight – 17.6 lbs. (much lighter than adult boards)
When it comes to looking for a hoverboard for the children in your life, there are few options better than this model. It comes with a cool look and strobing LED lights that synchronize to the music the youngster is playing to.
Aside from the aesthetics, it is a safe and well-performing hoverboard. Its very responsive sensor makes it a great choice for getting the hang of maneuvering a hoverboard. This also helps improve the overall safety of the unit. Moreover, it's nearly half the weight of the two boards we introduced above, making it much easier for kids to carry around.
Overall, I think this is arguably one of the best hoverboards for less than $200.
Even with those sensors to help, there is a bit of a learning curve in the operation of this model (most kids do quickly get the hang of it, though). Also, if you are looking for a powerful hoverboard that you can take anywhere, or one that can accommodate adults, this unit may not be what you are looking for, as the motor does not produce a lot of power.
Who Is this Hoverboard Good For?
I've chosen this hoverboard recommendation specifically for kids. It was designed for their riding needs, it's much lighter in weight, and it has the awesome feature of synchonizing lights to music played through its speakers. Some adults may fit within the weight limit, but it's still not recommended for them.
2. SISIGAD 6.5": Best Entry Board & Budget Friendly
The second board I want to introduce is the SISIGAD 6.5 inch (FYI: the 6.5 inch refers to the size of the wheels!) I've chosen this one specifically because it is fun all-around board that is ideal for beginners (both children and adults), and it's one of the cheapest hoverboards on the market. Oh, and it's the top selling board on Amazon at the time of writing!
- Top speed: 6 MPH
- Can carry 44-200 lbs
- Unique spinning LED lights on the wheels
- Board weight: 20 lbs (9kg)
- Charing time: 3-5 hours
- Using time: 30 min to 1 hour
- Designed with 6.5” tires
- Bluetooth speakers
OK, so the SISIGAD isn't going to blow you away with immense power or speed (you'll have to scroll further down in the list for those ones). But what this machine does offer is perfect for beginners who've never ridden a hoverboard before. It's also quite lightweight, making it easy to carry around.
The SISIGAD can handle riders up to 200 pounds, meaning its good for both adults and kids. It's even got bluetooth speakers and spinning lights on the wheels for an extra fun ride, especially in the dark! For some extra fun colors, you can also try the FUN EDITION!
And one of the best parts? The price. It's not wonder this hoverboard is the #1 top seller on Amazon (at the time I wrote this). Sure, you can go even lower in price, such as these hoverboards under $100, but then you have to sacrifice features and quality.
So if you want a cheaper board like this one, it also means you aren't going to be able to ride super fast. This board maxes out at 6 MPH, which is only half what the fastest hoverboards on the market can do. Moreover, the batteries don't last long, yet take up to five hours to charge. Moreover, its not suitable for offroading.
3. Hover-1 Titan 10": Best Mid-Range for Adults
For my third hoverboard recommendation, I'm kicking it up a notch with the Hover-1 Titan, from one of the top hoverboard brands. It offers a wide array of features that older and/or more experienced users will love.
- Capable of up to 7.5 MPH
- Three skill level riding modes
- Powered by a 36V Ah lithium-ion battery
- Built-in battery level indicator
- Able to maintain a charge for 8.4 miles
- Weight capacity – 265 lbs.
- Equipped with Bluetooth speakers
- Downloadable app with multiple functions
- Motor power – 150W
- UL2272 Certified and UL2271 Certified Battery
There is a lot to love about this hoverboard. Not only is it from one of the best brands on the market, Hover-1, but also it is incredibly safe. The overall design of the unit is one that looks sleek but that doesn’t take away from the performance at all. It is best for riders with either a little or a lot of experience, especially with its three riding modes to choose from.
The motor gives the unit enough power to handle rough surfaces very well, especially thanks to its 10-inch wheels (the largest size possible). Last but not least, bluetooth speakers are a fun feature to have, and the app can do all sorts of things, like monitoring your battery life, range, your effort vs. the motor's, plan your routes and more.
Just because there is a lot to rave about doesn’t mean that it's perfect. None of these affect the performance, though. First, the manufacturer recommends this board for riders aged 15+ and with some experience (although some reviewers say their kids did fine on it!)
Also, some Hover-1 Titan owners complain about the exterior of the board scratching easily, as well as the price you have to pay to call this board your own; it's not the cheapest, but it certainly isn't the most expensive, either. Finally, the charging time of up to 4.5 hours is not the worst, but also not the best.
Who Is this Hoverboard Good For?
Despite some minor complaints, I think this is an all-around reliable board older teens and adults in the medium price range. The Hover-1 Titan is a fine choice for anyone who wants a high quality board, and is willing to pay a little more than rock bottom, but also doesn't want to break the bank.
Although experience isn't absolutely necessary and kids can even ride it, the manufacturer does recommend it for older users mainly. Thus this board makes a good upgrade for those who have already learned on a lower-level starter board.
4. Gyroor Warrior 8.5": Powerful Board for the Whole Family
The Warrior is just that – a warrior. It is a powerful device crafted to easily be used off-road and fitted with tons of other features to make your ride exciting and entertaining. It also makes my list of the best hoverboards for going off-road.
- Child and adult modes
- Dual 350W motors
- 8.5” tires made for offroading
- High-quality speakers
- Added self-balancing technology
- UL2272 certified
- Weight capacity – 265 lbs.
- Max speed – 9.5 MPH
- Charging time – up to 2 hrs.
- Runs on a 36V 4.0 Ah lithium-ion battery
- Distance on charge – up to 9.5 miles
- App with loads of features
The Warrior is a heavy-duty hoverboard that comes with a lot of great features and benefits. It is designed to be sturdy and good for riding on all forms of terrain, including shock absorbancy and water resistance, and it can go really fast.
Coupled with the high-quality speakers and LED lights, this board is like a party beneath your feet. What's more, it is suitable for ages 7 and up, complete with advanced self-balance technology to make for an even easier ride as well as child & adult modes.
Unfortunately, there are a few issues that we would be remiss without mentioning. These issues all have to do with unwanted noises. The first is the noise upon startup. Many have found it to be quite annoying. Along with this, there is an incessant beeping when obstacles are hit.
Who Is this Hoverboard Good For?
As another medium-priced hoverboard, the Gyroor Warrior is a reliable hoverboard, but with a little more oomph than the Hover-1 Titan. It has a higher maximum speed, charges faster, and is suitable for all ages of riders. If you're willing to spend a little more than the Hover-1, this hoverboard is ideal for people who want offroading capabilities, and can even be shared by the whole family.
5. EPIKGO 8.5” Classic: High Speed King
The final entry on my list of best hoverboards is another all-terrain model that offers even more power than the models we have already looked at, and is the fastest & most robust (but also priciest) hoverboard on my list. Welcome to the EPIKGO!
- UL2271 & UL2272 certified
- Fitted with dual 400W motors
- Super fast acceleration up to 10 MPH
- Up to 10 miles on one charge
- Capable of climbing an 18-degree incline
- All-terrain tires (8.5”)
- Weight capacity – 240 lbs.
- IP56 rated water resistance
The EPIKGO is the most powerful unit I'm going to recommend on this list. With its dual 400W motors (combined 800W), it can accelerate really fast, reaching speeds up 10 MPH. Only a few other hoverboards currently on the market can go faster, such as its much more expensive cousin, the EPIKGO Sports series.
The EPIKGO classic model is an all-around beast. It is large, robust, and can handle all kinds of offroading.
There are a few issues, though, that could cause some to hesitate before choosing this hoverboard. The first is the fact that it is not built with a power level indicator. The other issue is only pertinent if you’re looking for a hoverboard for a child. Because of its power, this particular hoverboard is not the best choice for younger kids.
Who Is this Hoverboard Good For?
If you are serious about hoverboarding and don't mind splashing out some extra dollars for a sturdy board that can handle riding on grass, dirt, or even mud, then this board is for you. This hoverboard, however, is not the best choice for kids or smaller sized riders.
Which Hoverboard is Best for Me?
When deciding which hoverboard is the best for you or your child, it's important to have a basic understanding of what some of the specs mean and what features you should be looking out for. For even more detailed information than what I provide below, see my 12 tips for buying a new hoverboard.
The hoverboards we looked at above ranged from 6 – 10 MPH (and I even mentioned one (see section #5) that can reach 12 MPH. In reality, most riders seldom cruise at the maximum speed of a board, but many of them surely try to reach it! See more here on how fast hoverboards go and the world's fastest hoverboards.
For kids or beginners, a lower speed is a good idea, while adults, experienced riders, or adrenaline junkies may want a higher speed. Note that higher speeds require a stronger motor & larger battery battery, which also jacks the size of the board (and especially its price) up.
This may be the single most important factor. Even more important than how fast it goes is how much weight the hoverboard can take. This will play a specific role in your decision-making process. Going over the weight limit of a board can shorten its battery life or even destroy it, and it is not a safe thing to do.
Most models will have a minimum limit of around 44 pounds (20 kg). But the difference will come when you look at the max weight capacity. The models we looked at above range from 160 – 260 pounds (73-118 kg) max weight capacity, but this one can handle up to 420 pounds! Read more about hoverboard weight limits here.
With any motorized transportation device, safety is a key factor. So are hoverboards safe? The truth is that they had a rocky introduction to the market, and some of them even used to catch fire. Things have come a long way since then, though. All hoverboards sold in the United States must be UL2272 certified, which means they have undergone rigorous testing and have to meet the highest safety standards.
This verification can be determined by looking at the unit's specifications or by locating the hologram sticker on the unit. This shows that the unit has been tested thoroughly and is deemed safe to operate. All the hoverboards I recommend on My Self Transport, including this page, are UL2272 certified.
Another safety tip is to invest in a higher quality battery charger. Here are the best chargers for hoverboards.
There are a lot of extras that can be included, like sound systems and LED lights. When we talk about other features, though, we mostly mean those built into the design, such as the following:
Climbing Capacity – You will want to look at the angle the unit can handle if you want to be able to go uphill. The hoverboards on this page can handle inclines of 10 to 30 degrees.
Wheel Size – Hoverboards come with wheels that are 6.5, 8, or 10 inches in diameter (that's what the numbers refer to in the board names). Generally speaking, smaller wheels are better for younger riders, while large ones can handle larger riders and are better for offroading (riding on dirt, grass, or bumpier surfaces).
Battery Life – You want to get to where you are going, so having a good battery life with a low charging time frame makes a big difference, but can also increase the hoverboard's cost. Read more about how long a hoverboard battery lasts and how long it takes to charge a hoverboard.
Final Thoughts on the Best Hoverboards
The list of the five top hoverboards I recommend above is not set in stone. As time passes, I may replace certain entries with newer, better ones as hoverboard technology continues to improve, certain boards are discontinued, and so on. So feel free to check back again the next time you are thinking of getting a new hoverboard. Thanks for reading!
