Meet the Swagtron Swagskate NG3
If you're considering buying an electric skateboard for your young kid for the first time, you probably don't want to spend a fortune on it, right?
Enter the Swagtron Swagskate NG3! This super mini-style electric skateboard was designed specifically for young children's needs in mind, by one of the biggest names in electric personal transportation devices. And guess what? It is one of the most budget-friendly electric skateboards out there!
What exactly do I mean when I say it's kid-friendly? Well, to begin, the skateboard is very small and light, which means it won't be awkward for young kids to ride or carry it. Second, the motor is only 100W, which is about as low as they come for electric skateboards. This is ideal for very young kids, because you don't want them to be going too fast, for safety reasons of course.
One thing you need to know is that the minimum weight for this electric skateboard is 44 pounds (20 kg). This is the average weight of a 6-year-old. If your kid is lighter than that, it won't be enough to activate the skateboard's sensors and propel forward. The upper weight limit is 150 pounds (68 kg), which means it can even support most teens. However, the board won't perform quite as well as you get closer to the upper weight limit.
Even though it's designed for young kids, I feel the Swagtron Swagskate has a really cool look and design. The yellow Swagtron logo looks pretty awesome, and the skateboard is totally unisex, that is, suitable for boys or girls. Even pre-teens and some younger teens will find this board sufficient to satisfy their coolness standards.
There are, however, some major downfalls you have to be aware of with the Swagtron Swagskate NG3. First and foremost, this e-skate lacks one of the most defining features of electric skateboards: a handheld remote to control it. Instead, the skateboard automatically detects when a kid gets on and starts pushing forward.
This way of working takes kids a while to get used to. Because it is not the easiest to control or to stop, this is why I only gave it three stars for safety and features. Also, because of the weak motor, this skateboard can't handle going up inclines, especially with heavier riders.
Features of the Swagtron Swagskate NG3
It's important to be aware of the specs of an electric skateboard before you buy it, and to understand what they mean. Here are the most important features and capabilities of the Swagtron Swagskate NG3 kids electric skateboard.
- Maximum speed: 9.3 MPH (15 km/hr). This is more than enough for young kids!
- 19.6” long and 8.85” wide. Super mini-style!
- Skateboard weight: 7.7 lbs (3.5 kg). Very light and easy to carry.
- Weight limit: 44-150 lbs (20-68 kg). Best for ages 6+ and pre-teens, but can even handle most teens.
- 100W motor: As weak as they come. Enough for kids, but not powerful enough for heavier riders.
- Charging time: 1.5 hours. Pretty good!
- Range: 4-6 miles (6.5-10 km). Not great, but for young kids, should be enough.
- Polypropylene deck and wheels. Doesn't show wear and tear easily.
- US-based support. Always a plus!
- Sensors to detect when rider gets on or off.
- Kick-to-cruise function locks in current speed.
- Lacks remote control.
If you're considering the Swagskate Swagtron NG3 for your kid but still not 100% sure, here are a few other options to consider. You can find more details on each of these in my guide to the best electric skateboards for kids.
AODI Bluetooth Skateboard
The AODI skateboard is an even cheaper option, but it is not technically an electric skateboard. It's just a regular skateboard with no motor, so your kid can ride it the normal way. But what it does have that makes it special is lights and bluetooth speakers for playing music through any connected device.
The WOOKRAYS electric skateboard is another mini-style skateboard, but not quite as tiny as the Swagtron Swagskate. Unlike the Swagtron, though, it's comes with a remote for controling it, as electric skateboards should. It's also more powerful, with a 350W motor, and has a higher weight limit, so it's a better choice for older kids and teens. To find out more, see my longer Wookrays electric skateboard review.
If you're looking for the all-around best electric skateboard for kids or teens, then I believe the Hiboy S11 is it. This electric skateboard is understandably one of the most popular ones on Amazon. It comes with 4 speed modes for learning, and is easy to control. It's also very similar to a regular skateboard's size.
Other Things to Know
When shopping for an electric skateboard for a kid, it's important to know that electric skateboards are not technically legal in some countries and states. They aren't illegal, either. In most cases, they sit in a gray area because they laws haven't caught up with technology. To learn more about electric skateboarding laws where you live, read my guide to the whether e-skateboards are legal.
Another extremely important matter is safety. Whenever you or your kid is riding an electric skateboard, you should wear safety gear, including a helmet, elbow pads, knee pads, and wrist guards.
The Swagskate Swagton NG3 is a rather unique addition to the children's electric skateboard scene. Instead being controlled with a remote, it detects when a rider gets on and starts propelling forward, and stops when a rider tries to get off. Few adults would accept this lack of control, but for young kids, you may be surprised at how quickly they adapt to it. But is this ideal? No.
All in all, if you're looking for a super entry-level (and cheap!) electric skateboard for a young kid or pre-teen, this one may be for you. Just be aware of the downfalls and decide whether you kid will be willing to work with them. Besides the control issue, this is a pretty cool electric skateboard for kids from a trusted brand.
If you're looking for more power, advanced features, or an electric skateboard for a teenager, then you may want to consider some of the alternatives I've described above.
Whatever you decide to go with, I hope you or your kid enjoys the ride!
